Tube tunnel shortens trip from Denmark to Germany.

The 18km long immersed tube tunnel between Rødby on the island of Lolland in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany will include a double track rail link and four lane motorways, making it the longest of its type for both road and rail in the world.

Recently, Danish plans to use public financing for the Fehmarn Belt tunnel linking Denmark with Germany by road and rail meets European Union (EU) rules and so can go ahead, the European Commission has said.

Approval of Danish funding for the scheme was critical for the project as Denmark will be the sole owner of the infrastructure and bears the full risk for financing the tunnel. Besides, a client has said that construction will take just over eight years to complete and, when finished, it will take 10 minutes to travel from Denmark to Germany by car and seven minutes by train.
